Apparently using these guns was a popular sport in Japan in the early 80s. I mean it was illegal to own a real gun so there was a decent size market for the plastic BBs.

Airsoft Guns appeared in North America in the 90s because not only did they feel real, but they look, function, weigh and feel the same way as a read one. The only differentiator between the “real steel” and the toy is the orange tip when you pull the trigger.
